August is American Artist Appreciation month and as usual, we’re putting on our own unique spin on things with a look at the Art of AMRoC, showcasing local artists and a variety of mixed media artistic pursuits, from 3D printing to digital art. We’ve also got our next Equity in Entrepreneurship cohort starting this month, ASE automotive technician certification test prep class, drone meetups, youth robotics teams gearing back up Open Make, HADO and much more! Read on to see the full line up for August, and jump in anywhere!
First Friday at the Fab Lab: Meet Yolanda Tanner
In this month’s First Friday at the Fab Lab livestream, we met Yolanda Tanner, a nearly 40 year Department of Defense servicemember and currently a STEM Federal Action Officer for the US Navy. A strong advocate for FIRST robotics and other high quality STEM education experiences, Yolanda shared insights on her work and the value of science and technical education to our collective future. This month’s First Friday talk is cohosted with PLUGHITZ Live.
August Programs Schedule
Drone Education Programs
- August 3 & 17 – MicroDrone Night with Tampa Drones – come fly your microdrones on the AMRoC drone field every 1st and 3rd Tuesday starting at 6pm.
- August 6 & 20 –6pm – Build-a-Drone class – Build a drone from the ground – Up! And learn all about the different components of a drone as you do. $45 per class. Register at Tampa Drones.
August 10-31 – ASE G1 Automotive Tech Certification Test Prep
Our certified technician courses are taught by Pam Oakes of US Auto Training, and prepare students ages 16 and up to earn their ASE G1 certification and other certifications for well paying jobs ($15/hr +) in the automotive industry. Class fees vary but may be refundable for certification test prep courses upon completion of coursework for those in the University area. Shinobi School Parents Night Out at AMRoC Fab Lab – August 20
We’re partnering with Shinobi School just to the west and across the hall from AMRoC Fab Lab, for a special Parents Night Out event. Parents can take the night off while the kids enjoy pizza, fun, parkour, and exclusive access to HADO at AMRoC! Learn more and register via the button below.

AMRoC Youth Robotics Family Orientation Day – Saturday August 21 – 2pm to 4pm
This is our annual all-programs meet-up, to go over plans for our youth robotics teams for the new school year. Read more about our youth robotics programs and sign up by August 18 for all programs via the button below. Orientation is for registered families only.
Open Make & Game Night – August 27 – 3pm to 7pm
If you’re working on a small project and want to use our smaller shop tools, 3D printers, or get some help with design, mechanics, electronics, programming or just hang out and work in a friendly, welcoming creative space, you’ll enjoy our 4th Friday Open Make, We’re also mashing up Open Make with Game Night, a great opportunities for families to enjoy everything that AMRoC has to offer, from our workshop to board games and HADO.
RSVP via the link below to let us know you’d like to join in an Open Make session. Open Make is free, although there may be small fees on larger 3D prints, but it’s mostly a time to make things together, enjoy some fun family time, and check out all that AMRoC has to offer!
Uptown Tampa Community Conversations – August 28 – 6pm
University area residents are invited to participate in our monthly Uptown Tampa Community Conversations at AMRoC Fab Lab. Each session explores aspects of area redevelopment underway, solicits feedback from participants about concerns and ideas, explores how to maximize opportunities for residents, and how residents can have an active voice in upcoming changes. This month, we’ll meet some local artists, as part of Artist Appreciation month!

Professional fees benefit youth programs, in addition to solving your work challenges. The team is currently working on technology solutions for marine, communications, and aerospace projects, and welcomes the opportunity to work explore creative solutions to your business challenges, as well!

Congratulations to our top three entrepreneurs in our Spring ’21 Equity in Entrepreneurship group:

July was jam packed with achievements, fun and special visitors! At left, two students proudly display their Infento kit builds. Special thanks to Shinobi School for bringing an extra measure of fun and energy to the weekend!
At left, the aquaponics Vertical Wall Garden project team, lead by WellFed Community and WellBuilt Bikes, with support from USF Honors College student volunteers, stands before the wall garden boxes at AMRoC. We can’t wait to see the wall come alive with plants!
