There are lots of online training platforms and resources, and we’ve featured some of our favorites here before, like SolidProfessor, which focuses on specific certification needs, and Skills Commons, an Open Educational Resources (OER) platform.  180Skills caught our interest because of its broad, competency based catalog of offerings.

Approved by the US Department of Labor Workforce Innovation & Opportunity Act, 180 Skills features over 700 skills courses across four basic categories: Technical, Safety, Continuous Improvement  and Baseline. Technical and Safety are pretty much what they sound like.  Continuous Improvement skills refer to mastery of management standards of ISO-9001, TS-16949 and Six Sigma. Baseline skills are those often referred to as “soft skills” or interpersonal skills, as well as basic math and communications skills that are identified by employers as essential to job performance.

Content is image heavy, with clean graphics, videos and animations,  and light text, utilizing clear, concise written content. Courses are designed to support both visual and audio learners, and modules can be customized for the needs of employers, educators, and workforce development. As a competency based program, 180Skills students are provided time to master concepts before they move on to the next, allowing people to learn at their own pace.

Costs are reasonable and scaled, from small to large business, and enterprises. You can learn more about 180Skills courses and download the latest course catalog here.

All in all, we deem 180Skills a good resource with a broad array of content that can be adapted and structured to a variety of educational and workforce training needs.
